Bearspaw Christian School (BCS) is an independent, non-denominational, private Christian school serving families with students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. BCS is located on 39 acres in the northwest corner of Calgary with a current enrollment of over 700 students from more than 400+ families. A fast growing student body allows BCS to offer one of the lowest private school tuition rates in Calgary.
BCS is committed to partnering with the family to identify and focus on a student’s God-given strengths in order to realize full individual potential, while developing a strong personal relationship with Christ. Our mission is "[to join] with the family to realize personal academic excellence and Christ-like character in each student." Our vision is "Teaching minds … reaching hearts … transforming our world."
BCS recognizes that the way it used to operate as a Christian School isn’t working anymore. The world is changing minute-by-minute, the shifting realities of families and students require the school to remain culturally and theologically relevant. BCS is listening to its families and is adapting to meet their needs by developing a fully-integrated discipleship-infused education. We recognize that just like teaching a basketball class once a week doesn’t make you a sports school… similarly teaching bible and having chapel once a week doesn’t make you a Christian School. We’re changing our approach by scheduling time into our school day to create moments for authentic faith to grow. “Programs only take a school so far… real transformation happens in relationships, [and] you have to make time and space for students and staff to invest in each other” says Dr. Marv Penner, the school’s Dean of Discipleship.
BCS follows the Alberta curriculum but we teach from a Christian world-view perspective and our program is grounded in God's Word, including class devotions, weekly student-led chapels, and a school-wide missions program. High school students also have the opportunity to participate in international mission trips.
Our facility features bright classrooms with natural lighting, library, science labs, a music/band room, and a state-of-the-art [28,000 sq. ft.] Athletic Facility with a NBA-sized basketball court and fitness centre. Technology is incorporated into our program with computer-assisted learning and virtual classes. Bearspaw Christian School also offers an aligned extension to its families through BCS@Home, which allows for flexibility in time and space.
BCS is accredited by Alberta Education and affiliated with the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), the Association of Independent Schools and Colleges in Alberta (AISCA), and the Independent Schools' Athletic Association (ISAA).
BCS has a rich history of serving Christian families in the City of Calgary. The development of the school, over the past decade, has been led by the active involvement of families and friends who understand the unique benefits and value of a Christian education. Founded in 1979 as the Heritage Christian School Society, which had previously functioned as Foothills Christian Academy, Heritage Christian School grew to become a system of three separate campuses. A group of parents had a vision for building a new, unified school facility on 39 acres of land the Society owned just outside the city of Calgary. A Development Committee was created and they began to share their vision with parents, staff and friends of the schools. In 1998, Bearspaw Christian School was established through the merger of the Central and West campuses. Parents, staff and friends of BCS formed an investor group with pooled resources of $1.6 million. An empty pasture, set amongst rolling hills, was transformed into a modern 28,000 square foot facility for 350 young people in Kindergarten to Grade 11.
